Buy & Sell
The market for Berthe Hess’s paintings has been limited due to her desire for her works to be museum pieces and because her sales were predominantly private with no record as to values. It is no easy task to place a value on a Berthe Hess painting.
We do know however that her paintings took up to 2 year to complete and thus there is only a limited number available.
An insurance valuation by Hess in 1973 showed values between £30,000 and £250,000 pounds. Factoring in inflation alone, would put a value of between £75,000 and £625,000 pounds. Whereas this may give us an indication of price levels in 1973, it is by no means a reflection on what her paintings would fetch today.
For authenticity, most of Berthe Hess paintings bear her signature in her inimitable style and have her thumb print at the back of the canvas.
